Meta’s Head of AI Research, Joelle Pineau, Announces Departure

Joelle Pineau, the Vice President of AI Research at Meta Platforms, has announced that she will be leaving the company on May 30, 2025. After nearly eight years with Meta, Pineau expressed that it was time for her to step down and allow others to take the helm as the company continues its evolution in AI technology.

Pineau, a prominent figure in Meta’s AI initiatives, has played a pivotal role in driving the company’s AI advancements. Since becoming the head of the Fundamental AI Research group (FAIR) in 2023, she has overseen major projects, including the development of Llama, Meta’s open-source language model. Her leadership contributed significantly to Meta’s efforts to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence.

Her decision to leave comes at a critical juncture for Meta, which is increasingly focused on monetizing its AI systems. Pineau’s departure adds to a series of high-profile exits from Meta, including senior executives Dan Neary and Kate Hamill. The company has initiated a search for her replacement, although no successor has been named yet.
