Veteran Nigerian player, Segun Odegbami had appreciated the Chief of Defence Staff for showing Nigeria that maintenance, promotion and restoration of national sports facilities can be done.
He applauded the Nigerian military for reviving the National Stadium and sports in Nigeria through the African Military Games.
He stated this during an interview with Voice of Nigeria Defence at the MKO Abiola National Stadium Abuja on the sidelines of the just concluded games.
He said the military has reminded Nigeria that the stadium is a national edifice that should be kept active and alive with competitions and maintenance.
“General Christopher Musa has shown us that we can actually maintain this place with little or no resources, he has brought this place alive, so it’s a call to duty and responsibility for all Nigerians, and more than all of that, is the conduct and the character of the military personnel during these games. We’ve not heard about one hooliganism, we’ve not heard of complaints, it’s orderliness everywhere. The military kudos to you”
He applauded the athletes for the fierce Ness they display in competitions particularly the Nigerian military athletes whom he said have performed increasingly well during thw games.
“We dominated everything, but beyond that, you see, all Nigerians should be reminded that where we hosted these games in the National Stadium in Abuja, the most beautiful edifice in this country, it should be the marker of sports in the whole of Africa, but it is not”
He expressed hope that some of the talents seen at the African Military Games can go on to fly the Nigerian flag at the National and international level.
Odegbami said he was pleasantly surprised when Nigeria played and he witnessed the quality of the players, their speed, their strength, and he could see national team potentials.
“The military are seareng an example for all of us, they have become a model, particularly in sports, they have become a model in maintenance, in restoration, in promotion, and in sports generally. We have seen it this time that it can be done, nobody should come and tell us that we cannot do anything in sports now, the military has shown us the way, we must follow them” stated Odegbami.
