The Minister of State in the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, has expressed concerns over global environmental challenges, just as she called for a concerted effort in tackling environmental issues confronting the global community.
The minister made the call at the 30th National Annual Conference of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), held in Uyo Akwa-Ibom state.
Aliyu, who was represented by the Special Assistant on Technical Matters, Tpl. Mubdiyu Mustapha, identified waste disposal, ozone layer depletion, loss of biodiversity, desertification, acid rain, deforestation, pollution as some of the prominent environmental issues confronting the world today.
She, however, described the theme for this year’s conference, “Global Environmental Challenges: Risk and Opportunities” as apt and timely, in view of the frequency and magnitude of environmental challenges the world is faced with today.
No one is in doubt of the fact that our environment is plagued with serious challenges, many of which are worsening by the day, leading to a state of environmental crisis,” she stressed.
The minister revealed that the FCT Administration has over the years been able to deploy substantial energy and resources to combat environmental challenges such as improper waste management, indiscriminate tree felling for charcoal production, open defecation amongst others.
The highpoint of the occasion was the conferment of the Honorary Fellow of the Nigerian Environmental Society, FNES on the FCT Minister of State for her contributions towards the protection and management of the FCT environment.
