Nigeria’s Minister of Regional Development, Mr. Abubakar Momoh, has assured of its commitment to ensure all regional projects are completed for the benefit of the citizens.
The Minister of Regional Development who disclosed this at the second edition of the Ministerial press briefing in Abuja, Nigeria, also said that the Ministry is saddled with more responsibilities than before.
“As a new Ministry, we inherited a number of projects to be completed. The Ministry of Regional Development has the mandate to formulate and execute plans and programmes and other initiatives as well as coordinate the intervention activities of agencies, communities, donors, and other relevant stakeholders aimed at fast-tracking regional development in the country.
” Before the creation of the ministry of regional development, our major responsibility was centered on providing interventions towards improving the socio-economic well-being of the people in the Niger Delta region. With the new mandate of the ministry, our areas of focus have extended to coordinating, overseeing, and supervising all the established development commissions in order to enhance sustainable regional development in the country.”
Mr. Momoh further highlighted the major achievements of the ministry which are set out in five major areas in infrastructural developments.
“In order to achieve its statutory function and the Presidential deliverables, the Ministry is implementing projects and programmes centered on the following thematic areas: Infrastructure development, environmental protection and sustainability, community development, education, economic empowerment, and human capital development, maintenance of peace and Security and coordination of development initiative.
“Other major achievements of the Ministry are Infrastructure development which includes: Road construction, water supply, Rural electrification, inland waterways development, housing, and urban development.”
The Ministry said it has adopted a public-private partnership to meet the needs of the region in the face of the dwindling budgetary allocation for current and planned activities.
The new Ministry was birthed on the 23rd of October 2025, to replace the former Niger delta ministry.
