Minister Hails Legislative Partnership On Nigerian Shipping, Port Regulatory Bill

The Minister of Transportation and the Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, has applauded the House of Representatives Committee on Shipping Services for its critical role in advancing the Nigerian Shipping and Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill.

The commendation came during an interactive session, where the Minister emphasized the need for continued collaboration to harness the full potential of the blue economy.

Speaking with journalists after the session, Mr. Oyetola expressed his gratitude to the Committee.

“Let me first of all commend the Committee; they have been very cooperative. We met to discuss areas where deeper collaboration is needed. It was purely an interactive session to identify how we can do more together. I must commend them for their unwavering support, particularly in advancing the Nigerian Shipping and Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill.” He said.

The Minister highlighted the significance of the blue economy as a key driver for Nigeria’s economic growth and reiterated the government’s commitment to creating enabling frameworks for its development. He also noted the positive outcomes of the session.

“We explored areas requiring further support, and they have assured us of their readiness to collaborate and align efforts to achieve shared goals.” The minister said.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Shipping Services, Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki, reaffirmed the lawmakers’ dedication to fostering a robust partnership with the Ministry.

Mr. Dasuki emphasized the legislative role in shaping Nigeria’s maritime policies and ensuring sustainable growth in the sector.

“Our meeting focused on strengthening collaboration, particularly on the Nigerian Shipping and Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill, which has been passed by both chambers of the National Assembly. We also reviewed policy frameworks being developed by the Ministry to support the blue economy agenda,” he said.

Hon. Dasuki underscored the strategic importance of the blue economy in diversifying Nigeria’s revenue base and creating employment opportunities. He noted the Committee’s commitment to ensuring legislative alignment with the ministry’s objectives.

“This was an opportunity to put heads together and identify areas for mutual support. The Committee remains steadfast in its resolve to support the Ministry’s efforts to grow the maritime sector and, by extension, the national economy.”

The meeting marks another milestone in the Ministry’s drive to solidify partnerships with legislative bodies to advance Nigeria’s maritime sector. Both parties acknowledged the critical role of legislative backing in establishing policies that will transform the shipping industry and enhance Nigeria’s global competitiveness.

The Nigerian Shipping and Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill, a cornerstone of the discussions, seeks to address gaps in the sector by creating a regulatory framework that fosters efficiency and economic growth.

The Bill’s passage is expected to bolster confidence among stakeholders and pave the way for sustainable maritime development.

The session concluded with both the Minister and the Committee reiterating their commitment to a united approach toward achieving Nigeria’s blue economy potential.
