Minister inaugurates new Board members of Agencies

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reconstitution of the members of the Governing Boards and Council of Agencies and Institutes.  


This comes after the expiration of their tenure under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.


The Minister of Science Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, while inaugurating over 139 Board members of 12 Agencies under the Ministry in Abuja, urged them to contribute positively to the overall development and supervision of their respective Agencies and Institutes.

Dr Onu said he is focusing on building a Ministry that is recognised as the best in Africa and the world generally, stressing that value addition would continue to be a goal of the Nigerian Government in reshaping and repositioning the nation as a technologically advanced one.

He emphasised the need to streghthen national institutions due to the current situation of Nigeria’s institutions being ranked among the weakest in the World by the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The Minister said the policies that would be developed through programmes, projects and activities must impact positively on the agencies’ respective mandates.

He said; As you commence your work, you should be careful with your suggestions contributions, involvement and dispositions to the strategic elements that drive accomplishment of mandates of your various agencies. Therefore, polices through programmes projects and activities must be seen to impact on very fundamental  element of your agencies mandate.

“Using the enormous power of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), our focus will be on the development of abundant natural resources as well as the orderly exploitation of huge potentials of our people and business”.

According to him, the Ministry is poised to engage the subnational level of governance including States and local governments.

Dr Onu stated that the Ministry’s presence at the State level would provide opportunity to STI in the supply value-chain in Agricultural production, business development of micro, small medium Enterprises and the academia in a constructive strategic framework.   

He said Ministry would soon establish six (6) Technology and Innovation Centers for global competitiveness in line with Presidential Executive order 05 and the fundamental principles of national strategy for competitiveness in Raw materials and product Development in Nigeria.

Also speaking, the Minister of State for Science Technology and Innovation, Barrister Mohammed Abdullahi, stated that the newly appointed board members would aid the innovation agenda of the Ministry.

Abdullahi said that President Muhammadu Buhari approved their appointment in line with the mandate of the agencies which is designed to strengthen the operational and Institutional capacities in discharging their mandates.

He further called on the board members of the agencies, to support the various policies put in place by the government to uplift a hundred million Nigerians out of poverty, stressing that the STI policies will aid in transforming the country from resource to knowledge base economy.

“I have no doubt your contributions and experience will further provide strategies and ways for adequate investments in the Nigeria STI Sector to drive the diversification of the Nigerian government,” he added.

In a goodwill message, the Senate committee Chairman on Science, Technology and Innovation, Senator Uche Ekwunie said that more funding would boost Research and Innovation outputs. She called for newly appointed board members to develop strategies to reposition their agencies positively.

Alhaji Gambo Magaji the Chairman of Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO) who spoke on behalf of all the Board members thanked President, Mohammed Buhari for finding them worthy to serve the Country.

He said their appointment was a challenge, promising that they will do the needful in rendering their services to the nation.

*National Center dor Technology Management (NACETEM)

*Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI)

*National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI)

*National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA)

*Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT)

*National Research Institute for Chemical Technology (NARICT)

*National Institute of Leather Science and Technology (NILEST).
