Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in combating illegal migration and enhancing border management.
The commendation came during the unveiling of the NIS Career Progression and Training Policy Framework and Gender Mainstreaming Policy in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted that the successes of the NIS in addressing significant challenges were largely due to the President’s encouragement and resources.
“Today, we can proudly say that we have the facilities and efficient, well-trained personnel deployed to manage our borders against illegal migration. Let me tell you, the Nigeria Immigration Service today has gone beyond the issuance of travelling documents but is very effective in the contribution to the country’s security management,” Tunji-Ojo said.
The minister noted that modern technologies implemented in the NIS Command-and-Control Centres are delivering positive results, and the government is committed to further enhancing border control mechanisms.
“We have the political will to build a better institution,” he asserted, expressing optimism for the future of the NIS.
Furthermore, Tunji-Ojo emphasised the importance of staff welfare and gender balance within the agency, pledging to improve morale and ensure that female personnel receive their rightful positions.

He commended the Comptroller General of NIS, Kemi Nandap, for her dedication to advancing the agency’s effectiveness and thanked partners who have supported the NIS’s modernisation efforts.
In her address, Nandap expressed gratitude to the government for its continued support, describing the event as a milestone in the service’s history.
“Today started like any other day and is indeed an important day in the annals of the Nigeria Immigration Service. We are here to witness the culmination of years of effort by officers of the service, stakeholders, and consultants who worked tirelessly under the aegis of the Modernizing Nigeria Immigration Service (MoNIS) Workforce Project to develop very key policy documents that would serve as guiding lights for the service in the efficient and effective management of human resources,” she said.
She emphasised the importance of training and retraining personnel to foster professionalism and efficiency, noting that the program would help empower the personnel to drive reforms and policies in a more pragmatic manner that will build a formidable institution to drive the service mandate.
She also highlighted the service’s commitment to rigorous and transparent recruitment processes, ensuring the selection of candidates aligned with the NIS’s goals.
Nandap further underscored the significance of the NIS Gender Policy, which aims to integrate gender considerations into all aspects of the service’s operations, fostering an inclusive environment for both men and women.
The Comptroller General concluded by expressing gratitude to Minister Tunji-Ojo for his commitment to the NIS and the overarching goals of the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to strengthen the agency and its service to the Nigerian people.
