Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, has ordered the immediate closure of operations in areas covered by Mining Licence 11810 in Zuraq, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, following the tragic death of several villagers.
The Special Assistant on Media to the Minister, Mr Segun Tomori, disclosed in a statement that the affected site is operated by Solid Unit Nigeria Limited, owned by Abdullahi Dan-China.
He noted that preliminary reports indicate the victims were allegedly mining in a pit containing hazardous gaseous emissions when the incident occurred.
In a condolence call to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the Minister expressed sympathy over the loss of lives.
Dr Alake urged the Governor to convey his heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the families of the deceased and the people of Wase.
To determine the immediate and underlying causes of the incident, the Minister has dispatched a high-powered investigative team led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr Yusuf Yabo.

The team comprises mining experts, environmental compliance officers, and specialists in artisanal mining cooperatives. They have been mandated to conduct a comprehensive probe and recommend appropriate sanctions where necessary.
According to preliminary findings, the company had reportedly ceded the pit to members of the host community following agitations for greater participation and economic empowerment.
The site, identified as an abandoned lead deposit, was said to contain stored minerals prone to emitting sulphuric oxide gas.
Unaware of the toxic nature of the emissions, villagers allegedly carried out mining activities in the pit, exposing themselves to hazardous fumes.
Mining Licence 11810 is located between longitudes 10.34.45 and 10.35.50, and latitudes 9.13.45 and 9.14.40.
Dr Alake assured that further details would be made public as investigations progress and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring safety and regulatory compliance across mining sites nationwide.
