Minister says Culture promotes Global Peace and Security

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai  Mohammed says culture creates wealth, promotes a sense of  belonging and also has the capacity to bring all strata of   people together for economic growth and economic development.

The Minister who was ably represented by the Permanente Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Ayotunde Adesugba disclosed   this on Saturday in Abuja during the celebration of 2016  world day for cultural diversity, dialogue and  Development also known as world culture day.

He further stated that cultural diversity is the greatest stimulant for peace, unity and development and as such, must be accepted  and promoted by all citizens.

”The aim of the celebration of this day in Nigeria is therefore to join the rest of the world in drawing global attention to the contributions of culture to human existence and promotion of global peace and security,” the minister said.

This years celebration in Nigeria tagged; ‘Promoting Peace and Unity through Creativity’ came timely as the country just recently hosted a national Summit on Culture and Tourism aimed at diversifying the nation’s economy away from oil with Tourism and Culture as the focal point.

Meanwhile, the Director-General United Nation Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation UNESCO said celebrating cultural diversity means being aware of the ties that bind people together with the environment..

“Cultural diversity means opening up new perspectives for sustainable development and promoting creative industries and cultural entrepreneurship as sources of millions of jobs worldwide.”

21st May is set aside by United Nations and member nations in line with its 2001 declaration to celebrate Culture world wide.
