The Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB) has announced a weeklong programme for National Privacy Week beginning with a Press Conference on January 28 on Global Privacy Week with Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Pantami as special as a special guest of honour.
A webinar holds 30th January on Safe Data Use Cases: Extending the Frontiers of Innovation and the Digital Economy. Day 3, January 31 hosts a Capacity Building Workshop on Data Protection and Privacy for
Data Protection Officers (DPOs) in the public sector.
The fourth day focuses on catching them young with data protection campaigns in secondary schools. On the 4th of February the y, the programme of events includes the celebratifirstear anniversary of the NDPB and the launch of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation Performance Report.
Data Privacy Week, an annual global campaign, aims at educating individuals and businesses about the importance of online privacy.
The week is “used to help spread awareness about data privacy and enlighten the general public on how to manage their personal information and keep it secure. Privacy Week also encourages businesses to respect data and be more transparent about how they collect and use customers’ data.
Nigeria officially joined the rest of the world in January 2020 to celebrate World Privacy Day with a National Data Privacy Awareness Week to enlighten Nigerians on the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), how it affects them, and impacts on business among other sectors.
According to the National Commissioner, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Privacy Week is helping to nurture a “culture of data privacy awareness” and educates citizens and businesses on managing personal information and keeping such data secure.
The NDPR is currently the operational rule on privacy but there are already plans for a Data Protection Act to provide statutory teeth for privacy and related practices.
