Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani has urged state governments and local Council Chairmen to adopt modern technologies and innovative solutions to accelerate digital development across the country.
Speaking in Jos, Plateau State, during the opening of the 13th Regular Meeting on Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Tijani said, “The future is digital but it must be inclusive and sustainable.”
The Minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Nadungu Gagare, expressed appreciation to the Plateau State Government for hosting the event.
Dr. Tijani noted that sustainable progress in the digital age requires public confidence in digital systems, strong indigenous innovation, and a supportive regulatory environment.
He said; “Although accelerating inclusive digital development comes with significant obstacles, these can be overcome through decisive policies, long-term investments, and strong collaborations. The challenges in accelerating inclusive digital transformation are real, but they are not insurmountable.”
Declaring the five-day meeting open, the Plateau State Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Cletus Bako Shurkuk, encouraged participants to engage deeply in discussions and remain open-minded so their expertise and creativity could benefit others.
Dr. Shurkuk highlighted the state government’s efforts to strengthen the technology and innovation sector.
“We are expanding broadband and digital access, improving ICT infrastructure in both urban and rural areas, supporting innovation hubs and youth-driven tech initiatives, and boosting digital literacy among civil servants, students, entrepreneurs, and citizens. These efforts reflect our belief that technology and innovation are key drivers of inclusive development, job creation, and economic progress,” he said.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the Plateau State Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr. Peter Lamba said the state was fully prepared to host the gathering.
Lamba noted that the theme of this year’s meeting emphasizes that innovation extends beyond technology, as it also involves creating equal access, empowering communities, and ensuring that all citizens have the opportunity to contribute to national development.
