The Federal Ministry of Environment has commenced a strategic retreat for the newly appointed Chairmen and members of the Governing Boards of its Agencies in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The retreat is designed to equip members of the Governing Boards with the tools and insights needed to effectively deliver on their mandates.

Speaking at the retreat, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Mr. Mahmud Kambari, stated that the appointments come with the responsibility of steering the Agencies toward achieving their objectives in environmental protection, restoration, and sustainable development.

Represented by the Director of Legal Services in the Ministry, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Salako, Mr. Kambari explained that the retreat provides an invaluable platform for members to engage deeply with the mandates of their respective Agencies and the Ministry’s strategic priorities.

“This retreat provides an opportunity to share best practices and collectively devise innovative approaches that can accelerate the attainment of our environmental goals. Together, we must entrench transparency, accountability, and data-driven decision-making frameworks within our Agencies to improve efficiency and public trust,” he stated.

He noted that the retreat aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Our focus remains on fostering an environment that supports sustainable economic growth, resilience, and a healthy ecosystem for generations to come,” he added.

Mr. Kambari further emphasized that, with proper guidance and stewardship, the Governing Boards of the Agencies will achieve measurable progress and exemplify excellence in environmental governance.

“Today marks a significant milestone as you are officially inaugurated and begin a retreat aimed at fostering strategic reflection and collaboration to advance environmental governance and sustainability.

“As custodians of our environment, your roles are pivotal in shaping policies, directing programs, ensuring good governance, and driving innovation that will translate into tangible benefits for national development,” he said.

He also pointed out that the Federal Ministry of Environment is at the forefront of tackling Nigeria’s most pressing ecological challenges from climate change adaptation and biodiversity conservation to pollution control and natural resource management.

“These challenges demand visionary leadership, effective oversight, and strategic partnerships at every level. Your expertise, commitment, and collaborative spirit will be critical drivers in enhancing the performance and impact of the Agencies you now serve,” he stated.

In a paper presentation, Mr. Daniel Omofoman highlighted the importance of strategic engagement.

He noted that one of the core responsibilities of the Board is to provide clear and forward-looking strategic direction to guide the Agency’s operations and long-term impact.

“Approving the Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plans: The Board is tasked with endorsing foundational statements its mission (why it exists), vision (what it aspires to achieve), and strategic direction. This ensures that all activities are aligned with the Agency’s core purpose and future goals.

“Overseeing Implementation and Assessing Outcomes, beyond approving strategy, the Board actively monitors the execution of strategic plans,” he said.

He emphasized the use of performance indicators (KPIs) and the importance of ensuring that planned initiatives deliver effective results.

The official inauguration and swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place tomorrow in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
