Activities marking this year’s World Water Day in Nigeria commenced in earnest with a sensitization walk by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation in Abuja on Friday.
Addressing journalists shortly after the sensitization walk which started from the Eagle Square in Abuja, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, Richard Pheelangwah, said the walk underscores the importance of water in the society, and the role the ministry has been playing to ensure Nigerians have access to quality and safe water.
“This walk today underscores the importance of water in the society. Water is life. Today has been set aside by the United Nations to celebrate water all over the world. Actually, today is a sensitisation stage, tomorrow is the actual day where we will have a press conference and expect the world to know that as the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, we are sensitizing people to celebrate water in our country,” he said.
Earlier, the Director, Water Resources Planning and Technical Support Services at the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engineer Ade Adenako, urged Nigerians to promote the significance of water conservation and efficient use.
Eng. Aenako said that the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, has done so much to alleviate the sufferings of the masses in respect of the provision of potable water.
He stated that although it is the responsibility of the state to provide potable water for its citizens, the Nigerian Government has initiated several interventions aimed at expanding access to water for the populace.
He added that this year’s World water day celebration would be marked with the commissioning of a water facility at the NYSC Camp in Kubwa.
“Tomorrow by the Grace of God, after the Press Conference, by the Honourable Minister of Water Resources, Prof. Joseph Utsev, we will be going ahead to NYSC Camp in Kubwa to commission a water facility that has been donated to the camp. This will be replicated across the nation,” he said.
The world water day is set aside by the united nation to commemorate the importance of water to the people in the community, even though water is available everywhere, it still remains a scarce commodity as access to cleans and quality water comes with some cost.
Each year, world water day adopts a different theme to address critical issues such as water scarcity, sanitation and preservation.
The theme for this year’s world water day is: “Glacier preservation.” It is in support of the first ever world water day for glaciers.
The world water day is commemorated 22nd of March each year.
