The Gombe State Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources, on Monday, commemorated ‘World Environment Day’ with a call on residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of plastic wastes. Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Abubakar Hassan, made the call during a road walk from Gombe State Environmental Protection Agency to Gombe Emir’s Palace. Commemoration of the World Environment Day began in 1973 and is celebrated annually every June 5. This year’s World Environment Day has the theme “Solution to Plastic Pollution”.

Hassan in his remarks at the palace outlined some of the measures recommended by the United Nations in controlling plastic waste. “Reuse of plastics, recycling plastics and making laws against indiscriminate dumping of plastic wastes,” he said.

Also speaking, the North-East Director, National Environmental and Regulations Enforcement Agency, Charles Joshua, said people can earn a living from selling empty plastic instead of dumping them to become a hazard to the environment.

“Residents can actually make money from plastic wastes instead of indiscriminate disposal, which would cause harm to the environment and affect everyone,” he said.

However, the Senior District head of Gombe, Abubakar Abdulkadir, called on the State and Federal Governments to support the Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources in performing the important task of protecting the environment.
