The wife of Anambra State Governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, has advocated for improved health and wellness through physical fitness, stressing the importance of exercise and healthy lifestyle choices during a recent meeting with the Anambra Chapter of the Association of Nigeria Women in Sports (NAWIS) at the Governor’s Lodge in Amawbia, Awka the state capital.
During the visit, Mrs. Soludo emphasized that making time for physical activity and nutritious eating is crucial for women’s health.
“The number one thing I always tell people is: exercise dirty and eat clean, that is the summary,” she stated.
She reiterated the significance of exercise as a fundamental pillar for well-being, especially during International Women’s Week.
“This is a wonderful time to promote our health.”
Highlighting the numerous advantages of regular exercise, Mrs. Soludo stated that it not only saves lives but also enhances lifespan and promotes graceful aging. She has been a longstanding advocate for healthy living for the past 17 years and expressed her concern over the unhealthy eating habits prevalent among many Nigerians, particularly the increased consumption of processed foods and sugary drinks.
“What we eat, a lot of things our people see as evidence of good living, is what is actually killing us,” she cautioned.
Mrs. Soludo also urged mothers to foster strong friendships with their daughters, warning against the negative influences of society and social media on young girls.
She commended the coach of the state’s girls’ volleyball team for her dedication and encouraged NAWIS to continue its efforts to promote sports among young women.
“NAWIS is a leading voice for the inclusion and equal representation of women in every arm of sports in Nigeria. I take immense pride in the achievements of women in various fields, including sports,” she remarked. “Our sports record books would be incomplete without acknowledging the incredible talents of female athletes.”
Mrs. Soludo further illustrated the synergy between NAWIS and her initiative, Healthy Living, stating that both organizations share important visions and responsibilities.
“While NAWIS drives advocacy for gender inclusiveness, Healthy Living perfectly balances that with a commitment to promoting good health through physical fitness. There’s a great deal we can accomplish together,” she added.
Faith Okwonna, the State Coordinator of NAWIS, highlighted the organization’s mission to advocate for women’s inclusion in sports at all levels. She discussed NAWIS’s initiatives, which include organizing sports competitions, workshops, and advocacy visits to girls’ schools. Okwonna also expressed her hopes for a partnership with Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, requesting sponsorship for the inaugural NAWIS Secondary Schools Athletics Competition and official endorsement of Mrs. Soludo as Grand Patron of NAWIS, Anambra.
Okwonna added that with this partnership, both initiatives aim to empower women through sports and healthy living, fostering a brighter future for the next generation.
