The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit has emphasised the importance of academic integrity, urging students to prioritise honest learning and shun examination malpractices.

During the annual Sisters Seminar of Kosofe Area Council, held at Ojota Central Mosque Hall, Lagos, Nigeria, the Amirah (female leader) of MSSNLagos, Hajiah Rafiah Tijani encouraged students to focus on genuine academic achievements to promote a culture of excellence and integrity in the education sector.

She cautioned students against compromising their values for social affiliation.

The event which also commemorated the recently marked World Hijab Day featured the female leader of the student organisation, Amirah Tijani, lamenting that many students were admitted into universities despite lacking basic skills.

Some students have A1’s in Mathematics but cannot solve simple fractions, while others have distinctions in Physics and Chemistry but know nothing about chemical reactions or energy conservation,” she said.

Academic integrity

Tijani stressed the importance of upholding academic integrity and warned students against belonging to groups that compromise their values.

The only person we can all belong to without losing our sanity is Allah SWT and faithful organisations or sects that make us conscious of Him,” she said.

The event, themed “To the One I Belong” and “Hijabis Unsilenced,” aimed to promote solidarity, challenge stereotypes, and foster a culture of understanding and respect for hijab-wearing women.

Hajiah Muinah, representing the Amirah of the unit, encouraged young ladies to maintain balance between their love for Allah and their love for their peers.

Effects on students

An accountant and Internal Control Officer at Deer Nigeria Limited, who is the first guest speaker at the event, Hajiah Ameenah Abdul Fattah, cautioned that mingling carelessly with people can have adverse effects on students.

She urged young ladies to prioritise their love for Allah and His apostle.

She emphasised the importance of self-distinguishing skills, selection skills, self-independence, and separation skills for students to balance students spiritual and academic success.

The second guest speaker who is the CEO Paceseters Phonics institute, Hajiah Halimah Tijani-Balogun, urged young ladies not to allow themselves to be silenced by societal pressures.

Put Allah first, knowledge, sisterhood, and excellence. Your Hijab is your power, not a weakness,” she said.

Exposure to social media

The female leader of Kosofe Area Council, Hajiah Lateefah Ibrahim, cautioned students against unhealthy exposure to social media trends, which can have a huge impact on their lives and society as a whole.

The MSSN’s warning comes amidst growing concerns about examination malpractices and the influence of peer pressure and social media on young people’s values and behavior.
