Museveni Visits South Sudan Amid Rising Political Tensions

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni arrived in Juba on Thursday amid growing tensions in South Sudan following the recent arrest of Vice President Riek Machar.

Upon arrival, Museveni was received by President Salva Kiir at Juba International Airport. The two leaders held a private meeting before Museveni returned to Uganda.

Tensions have escalated since Machar’s arrest last month, with his political group declaring that the 2018 peace agreement is now effectively over. This has fueled fears of renewed conflict between government forces loyal to Kiir and Machar’s troops and allied militias.

Museveni’s visit follows the arrival of African Union mediators in Juba, who are assessing the fragile situation and working toward a resolution.
