Muslims globally have begun fasting 29 or 30 days in the month of Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection.
Saudi Arabia announced the sighting of the moon on Friday while in Nigeria, the President of the Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar confirmed the sighting of the moon in different parts of Nigeria.
The Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has felicitated with Muslims on the commencement of fasting in the month of Ramadan.

State governors and other leaders have sent messages of love, humanity and tolerance to mark the beginning of the fasting period.
Ramadan Essentials
The key features of the Ramadan period include fervent prayers late at night called Tarawih; Extensive readings of the holy Qur’an and explanations of its meanings referred to as Tafsir; and abstaining from food and drinks from early morning till evening.
Praying, alms giving, and breaking of fasting in congregation at the mosques and homes are other features of Ramadan.
Before the end of the one month fasting period, payment or observation of sadaqah, charity (Sadaqatul fitri )on every household is compulsory. On the last day of Ramadan, the moon must be sighted to end the month.

Thereafter, a compulsory two rak’ah prayers are done to mark the end of Ramadan fasting period with celebration, the Eid al-Fitr.
