The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) have established a Joint Technical Committee to address aviation-related matters effectively.

The inauguration, successfully held at the NAICOM office in Abuja on Wednesday, marked the beginning of a new collaborative effort between the two government agencies.

Mr. Ayo Omosehin, the Commissioner for Insurance and CEO of NAICOM, was represented at the event by Dr. Usman Jankara, the Deputy Commissioner (Technical), who warmly welcomed the NCAA team led by Mrs. Rominiyi F. Dorcas.

According to Dr. Jankara, the Commission’s primary responsibility is to regulate the insurance industry’s business activities and safeguard the interests of policyholders. This comes in response to misconceptions that the Commission primarily serves the interests of insurance operators, rather than balancing the needs of all stakeholders.

By emphasising its core mandate, the Commission seeks to reassure the public that protecting policyholders remains a top priority.

The primary objective of the joint technical committee is to reaffirm the Commission’s long-standing commitment to safeguarding the interests of policyholders. In the event of any accident or incident, the committee ensures that all affected third parties receive fair compensation and are properly indemnified.

The terms of reference for the joint committee include:

  1. Verification of certificates of insurance and other related documents of airline operators, affiliate agencies, and NCAA service providers.
  2. Providing technical support to the NCAA on insurance matters.
  3. Coordinating and facilitating the resolution of airline operators’ complaints regarding insurance coverage and services during periodic meetings.
  4. Advising the NCAA on aviation insurance matters related to adequacy and validity.
  5. Coordinating training, workshops, and awareness programs for NCAA, NAICOM, and stakeholders on aviation insurance.
  6. Providing training on insurance and aviation-related matters.
  7. Organizing and attending periodic meetings of both organizations.
  8. Periodically reviewing minimum insurance cover requirements for individuals or groups involved in aviation operations to ensure adequate insurance coverage.
  9. Organizing and attending periodic meetings with airline operators and insurance providers.
  10. Performing any other tasks as required under the collaboration.

Mrs Dorcas, NCAA’s Deputy General Manager for Financial Health and Aviation Insurance and the leader of the delegation, pledged her team’s full dedication to achieving the committee’s objectives. She emphasized their commitment to ensuring the success of the collaboration.

In conclusion, Dr. Jankara formally announced the inauguration of the joint committee after finalizing the terms of reference. He stressed the importance of flexibility and the automation of processes, expressing confidence in the committee’s ability to deliver due to the competence of its members.

In his vote of thanks, Mr. Ajuyah Omeresan Alfred, Assistant Director of Special Risk, reaffirmed NAICOM’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the aviation sector, now and in the future.
