Nasarawa State Assembly: Lawmaker Promises to Sponsor Women & Children-friendly Bills
Amina Mohammed, Lafia.
A member representing Lafia Central Constituency and the Minority Whip of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Solomon Akwashiki, has promised to sponsor women and children-friendly bills in the state.
Hon. Akwashiki stated this when the leadership of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) paid him an advocacy visit in Lafia, the state capital.
The lawmaker commended the women journalists for carrying the burden of women and children on their shoulders despite their tight schedules.
He urged women journalists in the state not to relent in sensitizing women to the need to be patient with their spouses amid the current economic challenges in the country occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal.
He further reiterated the need for lawmakers in Nasarawa State to scale up efforts towards sponsoring women and children-friendly bills.
Speaking, the State Chairperson of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Comrade Hadiza Umar, explained that the core mandate of NAWOJ is to give a voice to the voiceless women and children, especially those at the grass roots level to enable them to speak about some of the challenges they are facing, which include gender-based violence and lack of education, among others.
She used the medium to call on lawmakers to sponsor bills that will empower women across the state to acquire some basic skills to become self-reliant.
