The Nasarawa State Government has established 36 mobile courts in the 13 Local Government Areas, LGAs to prosecute those caught violating environmental sanitation laws of the state.
Permanent Secretary, PS, Nasarawa State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Garba Mohammed, stated this while briefing journalists in Lafia after the July sanitation exercise.
The PS represented by Chief Environment Officer, Mr Abubakar Mohammed, who is also the Chief Prosecutor of the ministry, said the courts were established in each of the 13 LGAs and 18 Development Areas to ensure proper enforcement of the exercise.
He stated that Lafia and Karu LGAs have three mobile courts each located in strategic locations for administrative convenience.
On the level of compliance, the PS expressed satisfaction and applauded the traditional rulers, Chairmen of Area Councils as well as the security agencies for the success of the exercise.
He said that about 90 percent of the residents complied by locking up their shops and business to clean the surrounding during the exercise.
He said the state was shut down during the exercise in line with the law, except for those on essential services.
“We only allowed those with permission from relevant authorities and those on essential services to pass, and move around during the exercise,” he noted.
Meanwhile, 42 persons suspected to have violated environmental sanitation laws in Lafia LGA were arrested and prosecuted by various mobile courts.
The last Saturday of every month was set aside for environmental sanitation in the state.
