Nasarawa State SWAN Expresses Disappointment At NPFL Team Position

The Nasarawa State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), has expressed disappointment with the current position of the state-owned male football club, Nasarawa United, urging the management of the club to do everything within its powers to avoid relegation.

The association made this known in a communique signed by the SWAN Chairman, Isa Muhammed and Secretary, Smah George. It was made available after a meeting held in Lafia, the State capital.

Nasarawa United sits in 9th place in Group A of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) table, with eight (8) points after 12 games. In its last encounter in the NPFL, Nasarawa United lost 2-1 against El Kanemi Warriors.

”SWAN appreciated the efforts of the State Government on the ongoing transformation of facilities at the Lafia City Stadium which are geared towards improving sporting activities in the State,” Nasarawa State SWAN said in a a statement.

“SWAN, however, urged the State Government to ensure other sports facilities, especially at the Stadium, are equally considered in terms of early completion, giving the fact that it has a way of affecting the psychology of athletes of the State.”

*COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF THE SPORTS WRITERS’ ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA, SWAN, NASARAWA STATE CHAPTER’S GENERAL (CONGRESS) MEETING HELD ON TUESDAY, 4TH APRIL, 2023, AT ABACHA YOUTH CENTRE, LAFIA*

  1. The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria,(SWAN) Nasarawa Chapter congratulated the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, His Excellency, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, and his Deputy, Dr. Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe, on their re-election to continue to pilot the affairs of Nasarawa state for the next four years.
  2. The Association also congratulated the Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi and all Members-elect to the Assembly, urging them to enact laws that will have a direct bearing on the citizens.
  3. SWAN commended steps taken by the State Government towards developing the State, cutting across critical sectors, with a call on the Governor Sule-led administration to continue with a good job.
  4. SWAN appreciated the efforts of the State Government on the ongoing transformation of facilities at the Lafia City Stadium which are geared towards improving sporting activities in the State.
  5. SWAN, however, urged the State Government to ensure other sports facilities, especially at the Stadium, are equally considered in terms of early completion, given the fact that it has a way of affecting the psychology of athletes of the State.
  6. Finally, SWAN expressed disappointment with the current position of the State-owned male football Club (Nasarawa United) and urged the Management of the Club to do everything within its power to save the Club from being relegated to the lower division.
  7. As a matter of responsibility, SWAN reiterated her commitment to promoting sports and related stakeholders in the State as well as supporting  Government’s efforts to improve the Sector.
