N’Assembly Resumes, Adjourns Plenary In Honour Of Late Ifeanyi Uba

aThe Nigerian National Assembly resumed its plenary sessions on Tuesday, September 24, following the annual recess that began late July 2024.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas presided over their respective chambers, reading several correspondences from President Bola Tinubu.

The communications included a Supplementary Appropriation Bill for the Federal Capital Territory Administration, the nomination of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun for confirmation as the Chief Justice of Nigeria, and a request for the confirmation of commissioners for the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

President Tinubu also notified the National Assembly of his rejection of a bill seeking to extend the service years of the Clerk to the National Assembly and other parliamentary staff.

Without fear

In his welcome address, President of the Senate, Senator Akpabio called on his colleagues to prioritise the security of the country by ensuring that every citizen can walk down any street in this country without fear.

The recent surge in insecurity, particularly in various regions, is a clarion call for us to double our efforts in crafting laws and taking decisive actions to safeguard our communities, ”Senator Akpabio said.

Change demands time

The President of the Senate who also urged his colleagues to remain patient and steadfast, said that change demands time, yet with unity and shared purpose, they can and will make a profound difference.

The challenges we face are formidable, yet we must confront them with unwavering candor and relentless determination. We shall neither retreat nor surrender in our quest to uplift the fortunes of our fellow Nigerians. We must prove ourselves worthy of the trust they have placed in us ” he said.

After these formalities, the lawmakers paid tribute to the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, CON, by observing a moment of silence.

Senator Ubah, who passed away in late July 2024 at 52, represented the Anambra South Senatorial District and chaired the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream).

Following the tribute, the plenary session was adjourned to honour the late senator’s legacy.

The adjournment of the plenary follows the parliament’s tradition of suspending legislative business for the next day in the event of a lawmaker’s passing.
