National Convention: PDP vows to return to power in 2023

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Nigeria’s opposition party held a successful National Convention to elect new leaders that would pilot the Affairs of the Party for the next four years.

Three thousand six hundred  delegates of the Main Opposition Political party trooped into the nation’s capital, Abuja from all the thirty six states of the federation and the FCT, to participate at the 2021 National Convention.

Voice of Nigeria (VON) correspondents observed that the PDP flag were hoisted in the venue of the event, Eagles square, while banners and decorations carrying the symbols of PDP adorned the area.

Making his remarked at the venue, the Acting Chairman of the PDP, Mr Yemi Akinwonmi welcomed the teaming members to the historic event of the party’s Elective National Convention.

According to him, ” Today, is a day that a new leadership of our great party will emerge, and by the grace of Almighty God, the leadership that will lead us to victory come 2023 General Election. I am personally happy to associate myself with the winning Party in the coming 2023 election.”

Akinwonmi then called on all members of the Party to come together, bury their  personal, individual and collective differences and put PDP and the interest of Nigeria above any consideration.

” I cannot address this elective National Convention without paying tribute to our State Governors who are the pillars of support to this great Party. Special commendations go to our dogged members of the National Assembly, Elders, Leaders and Stakeholders,” he added.

Also speaking, a chieftains of the Party and Former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar said, “As we ruminate the problems of our great country, consider this. We have a chance now to set the ship on the right course. We have the chance to atone for the mistakes of past leadership and our collective past mistakes. We have the chance to unite the country on a path to greatness to achieve and exceed the dreams of our founding fathers who fought for independence so many years ago. Let’s seize the opportunity to steer our country towards its rightful position among the comity of nations.”

Alhaji Atiku enjoined members of the Party to bring forth their brightest lights and position themselves to rescue, restore and rebuild the foundation and usher in prosperity, decency, security, economic growth, reduce unemployment and dignity of our country.

He also appealed to members of the party and to all Nigerians to shun their past differences, to set aside political machinations and scheming and wrestle power from the APC led government.

It was further observed that three thousand five hundred and eleven delegates were fully accredited to elect persons into the 21 elective position of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP. Thought, only three positions were later contested, all other eighteen elective positions emerged as consensus. The three position sloted out were the Deputy Chairman North, Deputy Chairman South and National Youth Leader of the PDP.
