National Economic Council Urges NLC to Suspend Planned Strike

The National Economic Council has appealed to the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, to shelve its proposed Industrial action and continue to engage in dialogue with their respective State governments.

 

Reading the Council’s Resolution on the proposed Nigeria Labour Congress strike, the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang,  appealed for calm and patience, he urged the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress to consider the impact of the proposed strike on the economy and the nation as a whole.

 

According to the Governor,” the Council noted the notice by the National Leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress to proceed in an indefinite strike from Oct 3rd 2023, the council noted further the implication of this strike on the economy and the nation and thus urge members to continue to engage with the leadership of their respective states and to appeal to them to shelve the action and continue in the depart of dialogue with the federal government”

 

Governor Mutfwang further disclosed that the Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his independence speech on the 1st of October will appropriately address the demands of the Nigerian Labour Congress.

 

He said that the nation is at a critical period when all major stakeholders need to support the government in its economic reforms.

 

“That is why we are appealing for patience and time to be able to address the concerns of labour we also believe Mr President will be addressing the labour 1st of October and some of the concerns of NLC will be appropriately addressed in the President’s speech”

 

” It is a federation whatever happens labour is represented in the 36states and the Federal Capital Territory so NEC is appealing that discussions should continue at the state levels because there will be peculiarities as to the issues to be addressed concerning the demands of labour, therefore, dialogue is the way to go”

 

“The nation is at a critical period some of the states when they took over on May 29th the workers were on strike some of the issues have just been resolved for the workers to return to work and they are asking them to go back immediately, it will further damage the economy”

 

Governor Mutfwang expressed genuine concerns about the leadership of the country to address the demands of the Nigeria Labour Congress and meet the needs of the general populace.

 

“Therefore NEC is expressing genuine concerns about the situation in the country and we are appealing for calm and patience I want to believe that the leadership across the nation this time wants to truly address labour and the general populace and move the country forward”. He added

 

Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, on the 26th of September declared an indefinite strike starting from October 3rd  to ensure the federal government of Nigeria proffer solution to the hardship facing Nigerians across the country, as occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy.
