National health insurance authority Partners NBA on Health Law Interpretations

The National Health Insurance Authority is to partner with the Nigeria Bar Association in the interpretation of health laws in Nigeria. The Director General of the agency, Prof. Muhammed Sambo, made the disclosure during a courtesy call on him by the President of the NBA, Mr. Yakubu Maikyau, in his office in Abuja.

Prof. Sambo said that the achievements recorded by the NHIA was due to the stability in the agency and support of relevant partners. “Part of what you have done in partnering with NHIA has contributed to the successes recorded. We don’t expect anything short of your support. Our profession is full of criticism! That’s our training” Prof Sambo said.
The DG pointed out that the NHIA is to convene a National Health Insurance Submit that would be used to harness more synergy and that NBA would to be part of the summit. He also noted that as strategic partners in health law, the NBA is to form part of all NHIA committees
“This is a appreciation of the immensed role the NBA has played in the agency. We are going to be working together until we meet Universal Health Coverage mandate. I think it is going to be a great service time at the Bar with you at the head”. Prof Sambo added.
Earlier, the NBA President Mr. Yakubu Maikyau, said that a healthy nation guarantees productivity. He said that the NBA was obligated to make NHIA succeed. “You can call on us anytime you come and support the authority anytime you need us. We have 135 thousand lawyers in Nigeria. And we have plans to engage lawyers in health insurance laws”. Maikyau said.
He also promised to provide lawyers for the training of NHIA staff in health related laws.
The Nigerian Bar Association president also announced that another one thousand lawyers would be added to the already existing number benefiting from the GIFTSHIP programme and that in his second year, additional one thousand lawyers will be added. He however, called on the president to show more support to NHIA through the provision of more funding for better implementation of insurance policies in Nigeria.
