The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter has called on the Federal Government to take more proactive steps to tackle the high spate of insecurity in the country.

The advice was contained in a communique issued at the end of the first NAWOJ Congress for the year, held in Abuja.

The FCT Chapter also called on government at all levels, traditional rulers, religious leaders, groups, communities, and parents to come together with one voice to speak against ills in the society towards making the country a better place.

The communique also raised concern on the high cost of living and sufferings of commuters as a result of the scarcity and hike in petroleum products and appealed to the government to put measures in place for price regulation.

NAWOJ also decried the incessant accidents on the country’s highways as a result of bad roads and called on the government to ensure effective monitoring and inspection of road construction and its maintenance, to make contractors adhere to the required specifications and standards in line with the best global practices.

The Association recommends that some mechanisms should be put in place to bring defaulting contractors to book to serve as a deterrent for others, as well as get value for money being spent on projects.

On the issue of the ongoing ASUU strike, the Association appealed for dialogues between the parties involved in order not to halt the University academic sessions, which might cause huge delays to students.

The Congress however condemned in strong terms, the killings for ritual purposes, bullying, raping of women, girls in schools, and called on parents to be watchdogs of their children while urging the government to improve security apparatus around schools.

NAWOJ also called for forms and special attention to be paid to the hospitality industry as people were no longer safe when they go outside of their localities.

It called on the government to mandate hotel owners to mount workable CCTVs to record happenings in and around their premises.
