NAWOJ frowns at physical assault of a young girl

Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Nasarawa State Chapter, has frowned at the physical assault of a young girl, Blessing Mathias by a Lecturer with the Department of History and International Studies, Federal University of Lafia, Dr. Fred Ayokhai.

 

The State Chairman of the association, Comrade Hadiza Umar stated this when she led other members of NAWOJ to the Police Command Headquarters in Lafia, the state capital.

 

Comrade Hadiza Umar who called on the Police to ensure that justice prevail in the case said they were at the Command to ascertain the level of prosecution of the matter. 

 

She called on parents to always inculcate in their children and wards moral virtue to build a better society. 

 

Responding, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ramhan Nansel said the matter has been taken to the State High Court in Lafia for further trial.

 

According to the Police image maker, Dr. Fred is arraigned before Justice Aisha Aliyu on six counts charges including criminal conspiracy, housebreaking and kidnapping. 

 

Other charges are assault to women with intent to outrage modesty, kidnapping and Inflicting physical injury.

“The offenses are punishable under session 97 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria Section 3 (1) and 4 of the Nasarawa State Kidnapping (prohibition) Law, 2019.

“It is also punishable under Section 268 (2) and 354 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria and Section 3 (1) of the Nasarawa State Violence Against Persons (prohibition) Law, 2019”, he added.

It would be recalled that a viral tweet of assault on a female teenager in Lafia, Nasarawa state, had been trending online.

The police command swiftly commenced an investigation into the case and two suspects, Dr. Fred Ayokhai, an associate professor with the Department of History and International Studies, Federal University of Lafia, and one Emmanuela Ayokhai have been arrested in connection with the case while the vehicle belonging to Dr. Fred which was used in conveying the victim to a location along Kwandere road, Lafia where she was assaulted has been recovered.
