NBA Champions Girls’ Empowerment Through HTTP Series

The National Basketball Association (NBA) held its first Her Time To Play (HTTP) Leadership Series in Nigeria on Saturday, March 15, at Vivian Fowler Memorial College for Girls, Lagos. The event featured panel discussions and a fireside chat with NBA Africa Vice President and NBA Nigeria Country Head, Gbemisola Abudu.

Empowering Girls Through Basketball

Her Time To Play (HTTP) is an NBA initiative that builds on the Jr. NBA program, aiming to develop young girls and coaches while fostering leadership, collaboration, and engagement both on and off the court. The Nigeria edition welcomed 87 young women, providing them with opportunities for mentorship and career exploration.

Panel 1: ‘Owning Your Power’

This session focused on leadership, confidence, and breaking barriers and featured:

  • Ibukun Abidoye – Executive VP, Chocolate City Music & Founder, The Nahla Initiative
  • Sade Dada – Meta Head of Public Policy, West Africa
  • Mayowa Kuyoro – Partner, McKinsey Nigeria

Panel 2: ‘Beyond the Game’

The second panel explored diverse career opportunities beyond basketball, featuring:

  • Olutoyin Odulate – CEO, Olori Beauty Enterprises LTD
  • Titi Ogufere – CEO, Essential Media Group
  • Nissi Ogulu – Founder, Creele Animation Studios

Inspiring the Next Generation

The all-female leadership series builds on HTTP programs in Angola and South Africa, which have impacted over 2,000 girls and women since 2023.

The event concluded with a fireside chat featuring Gbemisola Abudu, moderated by Nigerian TV host Bolanle Olukanni.
