NBA Gets First Female Chairman in Sokoto State

The Nigerian Bar Association NBA Sokoto State branch has elected the first female in history, Barrister Rashidat Mohammed, as chairman to lead their activities for the next two years.

Barrister Rashidat scored seventy votes to defeat her closest rival Barrister Yahaya Yunusa Gwazawa who scored 68 votes.

Also, Barrister Mohammed Anas Shuni emerged as Assistant Secretary with 70 votes which he beat his opponent Barrister Fatima Attahiru Hassan who scored 67 votes.

Other positions who return elected unopposed are Barrister Mohammed Mansur Aliyu, as Vice Chairman, Barrister Umar Aliyu, as Secretary, Muhammad Buhari Abubakar as Treasurer, and Barrister Ibrahim Sale Zamau as provost and among other positions.

The oath of office was administered to the newly elected executives of the association by a judge of the higher Court, Justice Kabiru Muhammad, shortly after the election.

In her post-election remarks, the Chairman, Barrister Rashidat Mohammed, appreciated all members of the caliphate Bar particularly the young lawyers forum for their support, encouragement and confidence reposed in her.

Barrister Mohammed said her journey to this position has been a testament to the resilience, determination, and consistent commitment and contributions of all members of the bar.

She noted that leadership transcends gender it’s possible to stand united, supporting the noble vision, and work tirelessly towards a stronger and united Bar and a more just legal system in the state.

She called for her opponent to come and join hands with her new administration to move the association forward.

 “My contender now that the election is over, I acknowledge that I won today not because I am better than you but because God has chosen me. 

 “Let us redirect our focus and energy towards shared goals. What lies ahead is greater than what divides us. 

 “I am an individual, but the NBA is an Association that requires every individual member. NBA is bigger than me, hence I extend a hand of fellowship and mutual understanding in achieving the NBA we desire. I count on your support. I cannot do it alone,” Barrister Rashidat charged.

She appreciated the electoral committee for their efforts in ensuring a free, fair and credible election.

The new chairman further congratulated the immediate past executives for their successful tenure and wished them success in their endeavours.
