President of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, has tipped Efe Ajagba to become the next Nigerian world heavyweight champion after the WBC silver heavyweight title-holder succeeded in his first defence.

Ladipo congratulated Ajagba for his victory over Australia’s Joseph Goodall on November 4 at the Tahoe Blue Event Center, in Lake Tahoe, Nevada

Ajagba was very impressive, knocking out the Australian in the fourth round, in the main event of a card presented by Top Rank.

A pile driving right to the head, stunned Goodall making his legs wobbly in the third round. Ajagba realised the effect he wrought on his rival, and didn’t let Goodall off the hook pounding him with combination punches in the fourth round

Referee Tony Weeks followed the actions very closely, and decided to intervene to humanely stop the fight. The finish came 50 seconds into the fourth round, and this victory leaves Ajagba with his fourth victory in a row, improving his record to 19-1, with 14 knockouts.

It was a revenge for Ajagba who had fought Goodall as an amateur, with the Australian earning a decision win in the semi-finals of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where the Nigerian later won a bronze medal.

Reacting to the outcome of the fight, Ladipo told PUNCH Sports Extra that it was an entertaining fight with Ajagba giving a good account of himself as he dominated the the Australian in all the rounds before sending him to the ground in the fourth round.

“Yes, I watched the fight and I can tell you that Ajagba fought well, and if he continues with this form and with a little bit of improvement he stands a great chance of having a shot at the world title,” Ladipo said

“However, my advice to him is that he has to improve his foot work and be very mobile in the ring. He really impressed and I say kudos to him for making Nigerians proud.”
