NBRRI Seeks Market Management support to curb fire incident

The Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute has pledged to collaborate with Abuja Markets Management in an effort to curb the growing case of fire disaster in markets and other shopping facilities across the country.

The Head, Fire and Safety section, Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) Surveyor Longtau Pirmak gave the hint while leading a team from NBBRI on a courtesy visit to Abuja Markets Management Limited.

Mr. Pirmak explained that Abuja Markets Management Limited was selected as a critical stakeholder in NBRRI’s search for solution to the unending menace of market fire disaster considering its regulatory roles in Market Management and the numerous markets under its control in the FCT .

According to him, NBRRI is organizing ‘a 2 day workshop on Fire Safety Management in Nigerian Markets between 8th and 9th of February 2022 -with a view to providing Pragmatic solutions to the incessant menace of fire occurrences in markets across the country’.

Having gone round the country to carry out fire safety audits on Nigerian Markets, Mr. Pirmak said that NBBRI felt a need to have a stakeholders ‘meeting/ workshop to intimate them of some of the findings and to jointly come up with steps that would mitigate against future occurrence.

Responding, the Acting Managing Director, Abuja Markets Management Limited, Arc. Ibrahim Uzaibat stated AMML’s readiness to partner with NBRRI to address the hazard of fire in Markets.

“We have been in the business of Market Management for 17 years now. So, we are fully aware of the need for fire safety management in Nigerian Market” he said.

Uzaibat observed that AMML has not recorded any major fire disaster in any its facilities, saying that this clean sheet was not entirely due to providence but also has to do with deliberate effort at emergency preparedness and high premium placed on safety.

“It is on this note that we make ourselves available to partner with you on the proposed National Workshop on Fire Safety Management in Nigerian Markets and even thereafter so that together we can share knowledge and experiences for our mutual benefit and for the benefit of other shopping facilities owners and Managers across the country”, he added.
