The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has raised concerns over an unapproved data tariff increase by Starlink, a communication company.

The NCC reported that the satellite internet provider had independently raised its data tariffs without obtaining the commission’s required approval.

Dr. Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, stated in a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja that Starlink’s actions contravened Sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 and violated its licensing terms.

He emphasized that the commission views this breach seriously, considering it a potential threat to regulatory stability in the telecommunications sector.

“We were surprised that the company announced price changes even after submitting a request to the commission seeking approval for price adjustments, for which a decision was yet to be communicated,” he stated.

He further added that the commission would take necessary enforcement actions against any licensee whose actions undermine the regulatory stability of the telecommunications industry.
