The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is concluding processes to issue the regulation on electronic waste, even as it advocates plastics recycling.

Prof Umar Garba Danbatta, the Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, made this known while commemorating the World Consumer Rights Day, 2021 with theme, “Tackling Plastic Pollution”.

In a special message to celebrate the day, Helena Leurent, Director-General, Consumers International, the membership organization for consumer groups globally, decried a plastic pollution crisis around the world:

“This is actually a global issue for consumers everywhere. It’s a climate issue. It’s a pollution issue. It’s a health issue and consumers do not want to live a plastic life.

“Plastics can be a useful material, but our production and consumption of plastics is now completely unsustainable.”

Lending his voice to the theme, Prof Umar Garba Danbatta, the Executive Vice-Chairman and CEO of the NCC said,

“The NCC is concluding processes to issue the regulation on Electronic Waste.

“It is mindful of the fact that many ICT and Telecom devices have plastic components.

“The objective of the Regulation is to manage E-waste; promote re-use, recycling and other forms of recovery; improve environmental management system of operators in the telecom industry; and reduce greenhouse emissions as well as enhance sustainable development efforts.

“The Commission implemented a strict-type approval process that ensures all equipment used in the telecommunications industry are of a suitable standard, both for the good of the consumers and for the preservation of our environment.”

The World Consumer Rights Day is observed on 15th of March every year.
