NDPC inaugurates Committee on Data Protection

The National Commissioner/CEO, Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, inaugurated the Committee for Curriculum Development on Data Protection and Privacy.

This is in line with the commission’s objective to establish a National Certification body for Data Protection and Privacy in Nigeria.

The committee is tasked with developing a comprehensive training curriculum, ensuring that the program is of global standards incorporating latest developments, legal frameworks, and best practices in the field.

The committee comprises experts in the Data Protection ecosystem, including Ibrahim Yeku, (Legal Counsel at Total E & P Nigeria Ltd), Olumide Babalola (Managing Partner, Olumide Babalola LP, Lagos), Prof. Nnenna Ifeanyi-Ajufo, (Professor of Technology Law, University of Bradford), Ridwan Oloyede (Co-Founder Tech Hive Advisory, Lagos), Segun Olugbile (Co-Director/CEO, Data Analysts Privacy Technology Ltd.), Prof. Simisola Akintola Chiderah Ike-Okwonkwo, (Head of Innovation, NDPC), would serve as the committee’s secretary among others

In another development, the National Commissioner, Nigeria Data Protection Commission, Dr. Vincent Olatunji received in audience, Korean eGovernment experts, led by Prof. Hung Kook Park, from the Center for Global Creation & Collaboration, Sangmyung University.

The meeting centered around the draft action plan for Nigeria’s Comprehensive Framework: eGovernment Master Plan v2. Professor Park delivered a presentation covering the four strategic directions, twelve strategies, and fifteen initiatives outlined in the action plan.

In response to the presentation, the National Commissioner expressed commendation for Professor Park and his team on the initiative.

The Commissioner emphasized the relevance of incorporating the Strategic Road Map and Action Plan (SRAP) of the National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) which aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 8-Point agenda of renewed hope and the strategic blueprint of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy.

The National Commissioner elaborated on each pillar of the NDPC action plan, providing insights on how each aspect could integrate into the eGovernment Master Plan v2.

Also, the National Commissioner/CEO, Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji spoke at the webinar organised by CISO Alliances Nigeria on “Navigating the Corridors of the NDPC – Strategic Road Map and Action Plan (SRAP), moderated by the Regional Director Alliances, Phil Manny.

He  provided an overview of the SRAP, resonating it with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 8-Point agenda and the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy’s strategic blueprint.

The 5 pillars of NDPC’s SRAP are Governance, Human Capital, Ecosystem and Technology, Funding and Sustainability, and Collaboration and Cooperation.

He discussed the 69 major initiatives derived from the five pillars and highlighted their short-term achievements such as the Nigeria Data Protection Act, globally competitive National Certification body, Capacity Building, and Awareness creation.

The  goals also include collaboration with startups, MOUs with regulators and various stakeholders, membership in NADPA and the Global Privacy Assembly, all aimed at fostering a robust data protection ecosystem.

Dr. Olatunji emphasized NDPC’s pivotal role in addressing challenges, including job creation, skill acquisition, innovation, technology, and building trust for foreign investments, among others.
