NDPC opens applications for Code4Privacy hackathon

The Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and the Abuja chapter of ISACA, a globally recognized professional association dedicated to promoting IT governance, have jointly announced the launch of their Code4Privacy hackathon 2024 programme.

This program is aimed at providing a platform for talented developers and tech enthusiasts to showcase their skills and creativity in developing innovative technology solutions that address privacy and data protection challenges in Nigeria.

According to the commission’s announcement, the upcoming hackathon, themed “Privacy-First Solutions: Integrating Data Privacy by Design,” is tailored for individuals who possess a fervour for safeguarding user data in our interconnected world. Its aim is to attract innovators with groundbreaking ideas capable of revolutionizing data privacy practices.

Applications for the hackathon, which opened on December 30th, 2023, is expected to close on January 6th, 2024

What to Expect

The NDPC said successful applicants will experience engaging challenges, expert mentorship, networking opportunities, prizes, and recognition.

Prizes for the winners are in three categories: gold (N750,000), silver (N500,000, and bronze (250,000).

The commission stated that the applications are only available to Nigerian students in teams of 3. It strongly advised females to apply.

The NDPC is tasked with various responsibilities, including the supervision of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) implementation. This regulation was introduced by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in 2019, serving as subsidiary legislation of the NITDA Act of 2007.

The commission complements the work of statutory institutions of government with the common goal of safeguarding the privacy of natural persons.
