The North East Development Commission (NEDC) is set to deploy electric vehicles, introduce a health insurance scheme, and expand infrastructure projects in Adamawa State as part of its mandate to restore livelihoods, rebuild communities, and foster sustainable growth in the North East.
Speaking in Yola, the State Coordinator of the NEDC, Khalifa Muhammad Lawan, said the Commission is determined to ensure every household and community benefits from its interventions by partnering with stakeholders, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
He explained that the planned rollout of electric vehicles, approved by President Bola Tinubu, will include e-buses for intra-state movement, e-taxis capable of carrying three passengers, and modified solar-powered tricycles enhanced to carry up to eight passengers.
According to him, Adamawa will benefit from e-buses, electric vehicles, and tricycles to drastically reduce transportation challenges.
Lawan added that the Commission will engage transport workers and other stakeholders before fully activating the initiative.
He further revealed that a Health Insurance Scheme is also being introduced to provide free healthcare access for vulnerable communities at the grassroots.
Since its establishment, the NEDC has embarked on numerous interventions in Adamawa. These include the construction and rehabilitation of schools across all 21 local government areas, the provision of classroom furniture and learning materials, and the establishment of three mega schools.
It has also built 500 mass housing units in six local government areas and undertaken road projects in selected communities.
The NEDC has consistently supported displaced populations and vulnerable households with food and non-food relief items.
Lawan reiterated that the Commission remains committed to transforming Adamawa State and the wider North East through inclusive, people-centred development.
