The newly appointed Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Adeyemi Olumode, has pledged to raise operational standards, strengthen rescue efforts, and win greater public trust in the agency’s work.

Olumode made the commitment on Thursday in Abuja as he officially took over from Abdulganiyu Olola Jaji, vowing not to let Nigerians down in the discharge of his responsibilities.

“This appointment is a great honour, and I do not take it lightly. I pledge my total commitment to this role,” Olumode said at his decoration ceremony, expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for entrusting him with the leadership of the service.

He emphasised that the Fire Service’s role extends beyond extinguishing flames to saving lives and protecting property.

“People should not attack firefighters. The attacks on us are becoming too frequent. We are human beings like everyone else. Our mission is to rescue and protect, not just to fight fires,” he said.

Olumode urged Nigerians to have emergency contact numbers for both federal and state fire services readily available.

“Please, before you leave here today, make sure you have the phone numbers of both federal and state fire services,” he added, stressing the need for quick access to help during emergencies.

He commended fire service personnel for their dedication and called for stronger collaboration with other emergency agencies. “Paramedics and other emergency crews can take over, but we value our role in rescue operations,” he noted.

Promising to build on the work of his predecessors, Olumode stated that the service would move forward with reforms. “I am committed to taking the fire service to new heights. We are not going to stop,” he vowed.

He appealed for unity and public support to achieve the service’s objectives. “I need your support. Help us move forward,” he urged. “I stand here today with renewed determination to transform the Federal Fire Service into a model of excellence—one that Nigerians can be proud of. To my colleagues and the rank-and-file: your dedication is our strength. I count on your support as we move forward together.”

For his part, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, challenged the new CG to deliver on the President’s mandate.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. This is not just an office; it’s a call to service. National safety is not negotiable. The Fire Service must evolve, and that transformation begins with leadership,” the Minister said.
