New Oloro of Oro crowned 243 years after lineage last ruled

The Oro community celebrated a historic and magnificent occasion as His Royal Majesty, Oba Joel Olaniyi Oyatoye Titiloye Olufayo II, was formally crowned with the traditional crown of the Oro Kingdom.

The coronation, symbolizing the return of his lineage to the throne after 234 years, was conducted with traditional rites performed by the Oloro-in-Council.

The event drew dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond, including Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, represented by his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Femi Agbaje Whyte; Kwara Central Senator and Turaki of Ilorin, Senator Saliu Mustapha, and Kwara South Senator, Architect Lola Ashiru, both represented by high-profile delegations; as well as Hon. Raheem Tunji Olawuyi Ajulopin, Member of the House of Representatives for Ekiti/Isin/Irepodun/Oke Ero Federal Constituency.

Other prominent attendees included Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, Executive Secretary of the National Institute of Cultural Orientation (NICO); Retired Rear Admiral Azeez Bayo Afolayan, the Asiwaju of Oro Kingdom; Alhaji Yinka Quadri, the Agba Akin of Oro Kingdom; and Hon. Bolanle Olukoju, Kwara State Commissioner for Communications.

Oba Ismail Yahyah Alebiosu, the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo and Chairman of the Irepodun Traditional Council, led traditional rulers from across Igbomina land to the ceremony.

In his remarks, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq encouraged the new monarch to lead with integrity, fairness, and compassion, emphasizing the importance of an open-door policy to foster community advancement.

Through his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Femi Agbaje Whyte, the governor urged Oba Joel Oyatoye to view his ascension as a call to serve, while safeguarding the culture, heritage, and unity of the Oro Kingdom.

He further assured the community of his administration’s unwavering support for traditional institutions, pledging to prioritize the region’s development and progress.

Oba Ismail Yahyah Alebiosu, the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo and Chairman of the Irepodun Traditional Council, commended the state government for facilitating a seamless selection process in the emergence of the new Oloro of Oro. He urged the people of Oro Kingdom to embrace unity and avoid divisions.

He encouraged the new Oloro to collaborate closely with the Oloro-in-Council, chiefs, elders, and other traditional rulers to foster unity and drive progress in the kingdom.

“The Kabiyesi has ascended the throne with divine support. He should maintain an open-door approach and carefully study the complexities of Oro Kingdom,” Oba Alebiosu remarked.

While praying for a long and prosperous reign, the Olupo emphasized the need for all sons and daughters of Oro Kingdom to rally behind the new monarch for the growth and development of the community.

Speaking at the event, Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, Executive Secretary of the National Institute of Cultural Orientation (NICO), highlighted the cultural significance of the coronation and its vital role in preserving Nigeria’s rich heritage.

Dr. Thomas Adewumi, Founder of Thomas Adewumi University, commended Oro Kingdom for its commitment to self-reliance and economic advancement, celebrating its dedication to progress and unity.

“Oro Kingdom has long been a hub of industriousness and development. Our people are united in prioritizing growth and equity,” he remarked.

Dr. Adewumi also lauded Governor AbdulRazaq’s administration for its equitable development agenda, revealing plans for a tertiary health institution in Kwara South.

“This government is people-focused and committed to justice and equity. We are partnering with the administration to establish this vital facility,” he added.
