The newly-appointed Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Benard Odoh, officially resumed his duty on Tuesday, outlining transformation agenda aimed at raising the institution’s profile.
Addressing the university community after a thanksgiving mass in Awka, Odoh pledged key priorities, including revenue generation, digitisation, enhanced welfare for staff and students, improved security, and infrastructure upgrade.
Odoh disclosed plans to mobilise over N70 billion for the university within five years, with a goal to position UNIZIK among Africa’s top 50 universities and within the top 500 globally.
“Funding sources would include tuition fees, partnerships, and grants, with a focus on Public-Private Partnerships expected to raise over N10 billion by co-financing critical infrastructure projects and supporting corporate social responsibility initiatives.”
The Vice-Chancellor emphasised the need for unity and commitment, issuing a stern warning against disloyalty and indiscipline.
He stressed the importance of enforcing policies and maintaining discipline, stating that the institution has been on a decline and must work together to revive it.
Odoh, an alumnus of the university, announced plans to reside on campus to better understand and engage with the community.
Outlining his vision, Odoh highlighted his experience as both an academic and businessman, expressing confidence in his ability to attract substantial funding and drive reforms.
His strategic plan includes eleven core initiatives, focusing on role model development, a strengthened university culture, and enhanced community engagement to drive academic excellence and competitiveness on a global scale.
On his first day in office, Odoh unveiled his administration’s blueprint, titled “Disruptive Model,” aimed at reshaping and repositioning the University to compete globally.
The plan includes establishing Nnamdi Azikiwe University among the top 50 universities in Africa by 2029 and pushing for a position in the first 500 universities in global rankings. He identified key projects and initiatives, such as the completion of a Vice Chancellor’s residence by 2026 and developing industry-ready graduates to excel in the global economy.
“My administration is committed to rewarding excellence, fostering innovation, and maintaining a constant leadership presence on campus. Through the Disruptive Development Model, I will boost academic quality, promote research and development, and strengthen partnerships with industry and academia,” the VC stated.
