NFF Calls Abia Warriors’ Adeleke Adekunle To Replace Omeruo
Abia Warriors defender Adeleke Adekunle has been called up by Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to replace Kenneth Omeruo for the Super Eagles’ upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches with the Republic of Benin and Lesotho.
Omeruo’s Spanish Segunda Division club Leganes decided not to release the central defender due to COVID-19 protocols.
Leganes coach Asier Garitano confirmed that the club had permitted Kenneth Omeruo to link up with the Nigeria squad earlier in the week. However, the Super Eagles defender would have missed two important league matches against Almería (March 27) and Mallorca (April 1), if he had joined with Nigerian squad.
Adeleke Adekunle is the third home-based player to be invited into the squad after the Enyimba duo of John Noble and Anayo Iwuala. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced the decision on its official twitter handle.
