A body and mind wellness advocate for women and the founder of a non-governmental organisation, Body Confidence Chick, Nneka Umuteme, has counselled women to prioritise their health and well-being to enable them to be equipped to contribute positively to society.

In a statement provided to newsmen, she noted that since women often serve as the primary caregivers at home, their wellness was essential for the overall harmony and happiness of the household.

“In a world where women often find themselves juggling multiple roles and responsibilities, prioritising their body-mind wellness can easily take a backseat. From career demands to family obligations and even personal needs, balancing all these can be tough.

“Women face many challenges that affect how they feel both physically and mentally. Stress, anxiety, and pressure to do well in everything we do can leave us feeling worn out and disconnected from ourselves.

“According to the World Health Organisation, depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and women are twice as likely to be affected by depression than men. Additionally, the American Psychological Association reports that stress levels among women are significantly higher compared to men, three times higher, with detrimental effects on both physical and mental health,” she added.

Umuteme however noted that despite the everyday tasks women are engaged in, they desire to feel good and thrive in all areas of their lives, but lamented that society labels women who take time to care of themselves as selfish.

The wellness advocate, who is holding a workshop on body confidence in March, urged women to invest in themselves and reclaim the power to thrive.
