A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Woman of Wisdom has empowered 64 students with marketable skills under its Women of Wisdom Empowerment Programme (WOWEP), the Ministry Administrator, Temidayo Adeyanju said on Thursday.

Adeyanju disclosed this at the end of a three-day training which commenced on Tuesday in Lagos.

Adeyanju said that the training would be continuous, and would take place in four different schools within Mushin Local Government Area of the state.

According to her, the training aims at equipping the girl-child with marketable skills that will ensure that she is productive, and does not fall prey of sexual abusers for monetary gains.

Adeyanju said that by empowering the students with skills, it would enable them have a voice and be valued in their societies.

We had a total of 64 girls in all; 24 were trained in making of pastries, 16 in making of hats and fascinators.

“24 students were trained in making of essential domestic items such as liquid soap, organic bathing soap, Vaseline and air-freshener.

“The focus is on the girl-child to bridge the gap of female marginalisation in Mushin Community.

“For now, there is no training for the boy-child but we are hoping that our sponsors will look into the matter soon as we have made pleas to include the boys in future,” she said.

Adeyanju said the training powered by WOWEP was in partnership with another NGO, the Women Right and Health Project (WRAHP).

It is funded by ActionAid Nigeria, a non-profit organisation, and Global Affairs Canada through the Women Voices and Leadership Project Nigeria.

A beneficiary, Miss Vivian Amaechi, said that she would make use of the training in higher institution.

Amaechi said that she really appreciated the NGO for the training, adding that the skills she acquired could serve as a side hustle for her.

Also, Miss Jane Ekijeme said that the skills acquired could serve as a source of income for her while attending school.

Ejikeme said that full engagement in the acquired skills would make her busy during the holidays.
