85 year old central school, Obioma, in Udi local government area of Enugu state, has been renovated and handed over to the host community for use.
The primary school built in 1937 was renovated for the first time this year by the Afri-Invest West Africa to improve quality of infrastructure in the education sector.
The facilitator for the renovation of the school, Iyke Chioke who is also the Managing Director of Afri–Invest West Africa, said that leadership and poor quality of education in the community compelled him to initiate the project.
According to Chioke; “I run a scholarship programme in the community but having observed the poor learning environment these pupils study, i was compelled to do something.
” I would have used the money to throw a party or asphalt the road to my house, or even buy a luxury car but i said no, these children are learning in a very poor environment and i needed to see what i could do to help out. That was what motivated me.”
The head teacher in the school, Mrs. Regina Aneke said that for a long time, she went cap in hand begging whoever that she comes in contact with to help in the renovation of the school which was in a very bad state before the renovation.
Mrs. Aneke said ” One day, i was just in my dilapidated office when a young man approached me saying that he would like to renovate the building. I was short of words when he said that because I have never met him before and he was never part of the people I have gone to before to solicit for help”
Meanwhile, a representative of the Enugu state Universal Basic Education Board, ENSUBEB who craved anonymity commended Iyke Chioke for renovating the school and installing a modern telecommunication capacity school into such a local community.
Protect the Computers
He urged the town union president and other members of the community to do everything in their powers to protect the computers and other equipments that have been installed in the school.
The newly renovated 21 seater 40 classroom blocks is to house an army of smart programmers between the ages of 12-14 who could through computers, work for companies and earn salaries to support themselves without leaving their homes.
