An NGO, Women Support Women Community Network (WSWCN), has embarked on awareness campaigns to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Enugu State.

The Executive Director, Mrs Amaka Nweke, disclosed this in an interview in Enugu, that awareness had become necessary to end the harmful practice, adding that WSWCN had zero tolerance for any form of female genital cutting.

Nweke said that the practice was championed by elders in rural communities, lamenting that the practice was ongoing in many communities in spite of various interventions.

“Female genital mutilation causes much pain and bleeding to the girl-child and most times leads to their untimely death.

“Those who perform the circumcision are unprofessional as such inflict pain and harm on the child,” she said.

The WSWCN boss expressed hope that the awareness would help put an end to the practice in the state.

“The age-long culture of the people will not be changed overnight.

“Aside from the awareness, the organisation will also embark on advocacy visits to stakeholders toward achieving zero FGM in Enugu State,” she said.
