A Non- Governmental Organisation, Jam’iyyar Matan Arew, JMA, has called on women across the country to seek more elective positions as 2023 general election approaches.

National President of the group, Hajia Rabi Musa Saulawa made the call at the inauguration ceremony of a caretaker committee to run affairs of the organisation in lieu of an election.

She said it is not always easy for women seeking elective positions in Nigeria, especially in the Northern part of the country, stressing that effort needs to double in that direction by women to increase their numbers in governance positions.

She said the group, which is the foremost women organisation in the northern part of Nigeria, founded in 1963, is nonpartisan, non-ethnic and non-religious but has penchant for supporting women that come out for election, not minding the Political party platform.

“If a woman candidate comes out for election, be it under APC, PDP, APGA , we will support her. We do not have preference for any party,” said the National President

She called on women to make sure they get their PVCs, hold into them and come out enmass to vote in the 2023 election as they always do.

If you look “through history, women come out to vote more than men during elections, so they should do the same in the coming election, with preference for female candidates,” She said.

According to her, the nine member Caretaker committee inaugurated in Kano state, headed by Hajia Tasidi Mohammed and Comrade Lami Bako Yakasai as Secretary replaces the Hajia Ummi Tank Yakasai led exco, whose tenure expired since 17, March, 2022.

She said the inaugurated Committee is saddled with the responsibility to create more awareness about the group and expand membership to local government areas of Kano state.

She said membership is through registration via a filled form, which is usually documented in a computer data base at the group’s headquarters in Kaduna, adding that anybody operating under their umbrella without registration should be regarded as a fraudulent person.

She said the caretaker committee is expected to operate within three months and conduct election that will usher in a new Executives for the state.

“By the set-up of this caretaker committee, the former leadership of the group is no longer operational, hence anybody that deals with them is at his or her own risk. Names of the committee are already with the Governor, DSS, and Police among others,” she added.

Head of the caretaker committee, Hajia. Tasidi Mohammed promised to ensure harmony among members and expand membership across the ancient commercial city of Kano.
