NGX Begins Week Bearish

The Equities Market kicked off this week’s trading activities with bearish sentiment as the benchmark index closed Monday’s session at any 0.53% loss.

Specifically, the Nigerian Exchange Limited, NGX All-Share Index fell from Friday’s 98,233.76 basis points to close at 97,708.74 basis points, losing 525.02 basis points or 0.53%.

The market capitalisation also depreciated from ₦55,562 trillion Naira to settle today at ₦55,265 trillion Naira, this declining by ₦297 billion Naira or 0.53%.

The Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date returns came in at -0.5% and +30.7%, respectively.

The day’s negative trend is reflective of the losses in SEPLAT ENERGY PLC (-10.00%), UNITED BANK FOR AFRICA PLC (-2.28%) and ACCESS HOLDINGS PLC (-0.57%) that offset gains in ZENITH BANK PLC (+2.06%) and GUARANTY TRUST HOLDING COMPANY PLC (+1.81%).

Analysis of Monday’s market activity showed that trade turnover settled 51.25% higher than the previous session, while the total volume of trades increased by 27.5% as 439.10 million units of shares valued at ₦11.38 billion were traded in 8,607 deals.

NOTORE CHEMICAL IND PLC (+0.00%) of the NGX industrial goods sector led the volume and value table with 74.43 million units traded in deals worth ₦4.65 billion.

Market breadth closed negative with 24 declining issues outnumbering the 19 advancing ones.

SEPLAT ENERGY PLC topped the losers with a fall from ₦3,291.40k per share to ₦2,962.30k per share, losing ₦-329.10k or -10.00%.

P Z CUSSONS NIGERIA PLC. followed with a drop from ₦27.75k per share to settle at ₦25.00 per share, losing ₦-2.75k or -9.91%.

And E-TRANZACT INTERNATIONAL PLC was next with a fall from ₦6.20k per share to ₦5.60k per share, losing -0.60k or -9.68%.

While the gainers had TANTALIZERS PLC topping the charts with a rise from 0.46k per share to 0.50k per share, gaining 0.04k or 8.70%.

On the flip side, THE INITIATES PLC trailed with a rise from ₦2.30k per share to ₦2.50k per share, appreciating by 0.20k or 8.70%.

Next is STERLING FINANCIAL HOLDINGS COMPANY PLC with a rise from ₦4.46k per share to ₦4.70k per share, gaining 0.24k or 5.38%.

Performance across the sectors mirrored the overall market sentiment, as the Oil & Gas (-5.9%), Banking (-0.8%), Insurance (-0.6%) and Consumer Goods (-0.3%) indices posted losses while the Industrial Goods index closed flat.
