The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has joined Nigerians across the country in commemorating Democracy Day 2025, reflecting on the nation’s democratic journey and the enduring struggle for freedom and justice.

In a message marking the occasion, NHRC Executive Secretary Dr Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN stated, “As we mark 26 years of uninterrupted democracy, we reflect on our journey and reaffirm our commitment to justice, equality, peace, and human dignity.”

He highlighted the Commission’s role in strengthening democracy by mobilizing voters, encouraging public participation, and monitoring elections to ensure adherence to human rights standards. These efforts, he said, aim to secure free, fair, and credible electoral processes.

Dr Ojukwu noted that ahead of the 2023 general elections, the NHRC organized town halls with presidential and gubernatorial candidates, urging them to integrate human rights into their governance agendas.

This, he emphasized, reflects the Commission’s dedication to holding leaders accountable.

“We intend to continue this trend, engaging with elected officials and aspirants to prioritize human rights in their governance,” he added.

Underscoring the link between democracy and rights, he remarked, “In the NHRC, we recognize the intrinsic link between human rights and democracy, where the protection of fundamental rights is essential for sustainable development.”

He further stressed the importance of honouring democracy’s heroes, saying, “We honor the heroes of democracy who have tirelessly worked towards a Nigeria where governance is accountable, rights are protected, and every citizen has the opportunity to live in peace and dignity.”

Despite democratic progress, the NHRC expressed concern over increasing insecurity and economic hardship, which threaten citizens’ rights and dignity.

The Commission urged governments at all levels to prioritize human life and justice, and to address the underlying causes of violence, injustice, and poverty.

Reaffirming its mission, the NHRC declared its unwavering commitment to human rights nationwide and called on all Nigerians to join in upholding democratic ideals.

“Together, we can give real meaning to democracy, ensuring hope, justice, and opportunity for all.”

Reflecting on the significance of June 12, Dr. Ojukwu emphasized the importance of honoring all heroes of democracy, including politicians and public servants.

He stated, “If the winners of the June 12, 1993 election have been recognized, both alive and posthumously, then justice also demands acknowledgment of those who conducted the election.”

He called for the key figures of the 1993 National Electoral Commission (NEC) to receive national honors and be immortalized in public institutions as part of the justice of June 12.

“Justice delayed is justice denied,” he said.
