NHRC to Partner with Tech Firms for Ethical AI Development

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Nigeria has announced plans to collaborate with technology companies to ensure that artificial intelligence (AI) is developed and deployed in a manner that upholds human dignity and ethical standards.

This initiative aims to prevent biases, enhance transparency, and maintain accountability in AI systems operating within the country.

At a recent workshop themed “Human Rights Dimensions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance and UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights: Challenges and Opportunities in Africa,” NHRC’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, underscored the need for AI innovation to align with human rights principles. He emphasised that technological advancements should not come at the cost of fundamental rights and called for a regulatory framework that evolves alongside emerging AI challenges.

To achieve this goal, the NHRC plans to facilitate collaboration among government agencies, private sector stakeholders, academia, and civil society. The objective is to develop inclusive AI policies that align with international human rights standards, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Nigeria’s National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights. In addition, the Commission has established a dedicated unit under its Legal Services and Enforcement Department to monitor AI’s impact on human rights and establish mechanisms for redress.

Dr. Ojukwu also stressed the importance of Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) in AI development. He urged tech companies to conduct impact assessments, enforce compliance, and provide accessible avenues for individuals whose rights may be affected by AI applications. Clear accountability measures, he noted, must be instituted for both public and private actors to prevent significant risks posed by AI technologies to fundamental human rights.

The NHRC’s proactive engagement in AI governance reflects its broader commitment to ensuring that technological advancements contribute positively to society without compromising individual freedoms and rights. By fostering responsible AI development, Nigeria aims to balance innovation with ethical considerations, ensuring a safer digital future for all.
