The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged Nigerians to Uphold Truth and Justice for Human Rights Victims.
The Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu, who stated this during the commemoration of the International Day of the Right to Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and the Dignity of Victims in Abuja, urged authorities and stakeholders to “adhere to the truth at all times and in all cases” to foster peace and justice.
He emphasized that the day serves as a reminder of the collective duty of all Nigerians to uphold truth, ensure justice, and honor victims of human rights violations.
“As we reflect on this day, we recognize the challenges faced by individuals who courageously speak out against injustices, often at great personal risk. The NHRC remains committed to supporting these individuals and ensuring that their allegations are thoroughly investigated and addressed with utmost seriousness,” he stated.
Ojukwu highlighted recent incidents in Nigeria that underscore the urgent need for effective mechanisms to address grievances and protect the rights of all citizens, particularly victims of human rights violations.
The Chief Human Rights Officer urged Nigerians to push for accountability and transparency, describing them as essential for peace and justice.
Recalling cases of injustice due to false allegations, he noted, “So many Nigerians today are languishing in jail based on false accusations.
“We must ensure that those who have suffered from human rights violations receive the necessary support and protection they deserve.”
He called on relevant authorities to collaborate in building a society where every individual’s rights are respected and protected, reaffirming the NHRC’s dedication to upholding victims’ dignity and ensuring accountability for all human rights violations.
